Architecture

LogistTM's architectural design is based on the following guidelines:
  • Openness: The product is built with an open architecture that provides a variety of applications, tools, APIs, and modes of operation for obtaining the required functionality.
  • Scalability: The product architecture is designed to support both small and large numbers of users without software changes.
  • Multi Platform: The product supports Windows and Unix platform with easy porting from one platform to another.
  • User Interface Components: Support easy and fast implementation of a user interface application in .NET and JSP.
  • State-of-the-Art Technology: The product architecture is based on the most advanced standards such as XML, Web Services, and so on.
  • Customized Architecture: Full functionality in all product tier and all operation modes, enables users to choose the appropriate modes of operation and integration with the product.
  • Modularity: Each tier has its own functionality. Different tiers are independent by definition, which means that modifications made in a certain tier do not influence other tiers.

Designed to achieve utmost connectivity and openness, the Logist Knowledge Family architecture enables information systems to connect to LogistTM and operate it in several ways:
  • A loose application-to-application connection based on XML data transfer to sockets or by files.
  • Embedded operation of Knowledge Server.
  • A tightly coupled connection based on integration of Logist GUI components in the host application.

In addition, Knowledge Server can be activated either in on-line mode or in batch mode. The Logist Knowledge Server exposes a standard Web Service API for easy integration in the enterprise Service Oriented Architecture.

The Logist Knowledge products support the following ways of integration:
  • Application to application.
  • UI integration (both embedded and separated).
  • An end-to-end application from Knowledge to the UI (GUI, WUI).

Logist Knowledge products use the international business-to-business (B2B) XML format for exchanging data among themselves, as well as for interfacing to other applications, at all levels.

LogistTM uses an N-Tier architecture that separates the interface, the business logic, and the database tiers. The different tiers can be installed either on different machines or on the same machine. This approach allows any of the tiers to interact with the other tiers, and provides the flexibility to operate under different configurations.

Logist Knowledge Platform runtime services are structured in three main logical tiers:
  • Data tier: The key modules in the data tier are Logist Knowledge Server and LIF. Logist Knowledge Server is responsible for managing all knowledge rule transactions, providing inference data to the application and the presentation tiers. Logist Knowledge Application Server balances instances of inference engines across multiple servers according to system load. Inference engines parse the data objects, fetch external data using LIF data connectivity, and activate the rule network defined by the Logist Knowledge Repository stored either in a database or in Logist Knowledge Runtime Files (RTF) created by Logist Knowledge Studio.

  • Application tier: Knowledge transactions are issued by the application using the Logist Web Service API (LAPI). The Logist API receives knowledge requests, passes them to Knowledge Application Server, and returns the responses to the caller.

  • Presentation tier: The presentation tier is responsible for rendering the application responses to standard Web browsers, handling personalization, localization and user interaction. The presentation tier is using Logist Knowledge Portal. Logist Knowledge Portal is a set of components, which can easily be assembled to build the application UI processes. The presentation tier uses the LAPI to interact with Logist Knowledge Server.

Knowledge Builder
Knowledge Server
Knowledge Portal
Knowledge Batch

Knowledge Builder
Knowledge Builder is a web-based graphical environment for defining the knowledge data dictionary and writing, editing and testing the business rules. Knowledge Builder manages a project, provides editors to create and modify the knowledge base building blocks, and features integrated debugging, inspection, tracing, and cross-referencing tools to simplify the process of developing and debugging an application.

Knowledge Server
Knowledge Server is LogistTM's generic rule engine. It executes the rules and manages requests for services by LogistTM clients.

Knowledge Portal
LogistTM's UI components that come in two versions:
  • For .NET environment – Data object layer + UI components
  • For J2EE environment – tag library for JSPs + UI components/li>
Knowledge Batch
Knowledge Batch Processor allows off-line processing of large batches of items; for example, processing a large population of a bank's clientele in order to detect risky customers.
